Stenciling Equipment

It does not take much to get started with the art of stenciling. A few basic tools such as a brush, paint and a stencil and you are ready to begin! You will discover as you get to know your art, that there are more tools that can be used to assist you in the creative process. They are fun and, just like your basic tools, reasonable to purchase and implement into your design.

A stencil card can be found in your local craft or general merchandise store. If you wish to create your own stencil, you will cut it from a stencil card. There are 2 methods for making your own stencil card in which this series will cover. Cutting out your stencil takes time but, with a bit of practice, your speed will improve, though never expect it not to be a quick process. Cutting stencils takes patience and the ability to accept the slow process. A Stanley knife, a craft knife or a scalpel, no matter the tool, be sure to have plenty of blades on hand for your project. When the blade begins to dull, it may not cut a neat line, so replace as soon as needed and move forward with your creation.

The cutting surface you use is important also, as it’s going to protect your work surface. A cutting mat performs that job. They are made out of a durable material that can be cut continually. They have a non skid surface. They are somewhat expensive, so you may want to wait to purchase until you are certain this is a hobby you will be pursuing wholeheartedly. A hardboard cutting mat is a good inexpensive way to get started. It will dull your blade quicker, but for a beginner, it’s fine. There also some more frugal alternatives this series will consider.

Sorting out the proper paint to purchase, at first, can be confusing. Information presented here will help you understand and make the right choice of paint for your project. A quick drying paint is best. You can then lift your stencil and change its position to continue your work. From water to oil paints to spray paints, surfaces must be considered. Artist acrylics found in the craft store are recommended. Coming in a variety of colors and quick drying may be a bit expensive for the beginner or a large project.

As you can see, the tools used vary and it would seem they can be tailored to every skill level as you develop yours. Storing and taking care of your tools is also something to consider as, if properly cared for, they can last throughout the years with little reinvestment necessary. Stenciling is a rewarding outlet to one’s ability and creativity. You are only limited by what you can dream. Stenciling is an excellent way to repurpose, recycle and beautify items that would otherwise be left to deteriorate and thus making your little corner of the world as wonderful as you knew it could be.
