Stenciling

The Art of Stenciling

The beauty of stenciling has been passed down through the ages. It’s even thought that stenciling was, at one time, the way cloth was colored. The first indication of this is found in the period of Edo in Japan. Beautiful silk being created at that time was stenciled with design. In Europe, around 1450, stenciling was used to create playing cards.

Today, you will find many beautiful and useful ways to enjoy stenciling. Basically, a stencil is a template used to draw designs and letters and numbers, or a pattern, if that’s what you choose to work with. The stencil technique used is called Pochoir.

Stenciling is a fun, easy to do at home project that will give you control over your decorating decisions. The creativity and accomplishment you will experience will have you hooked in no time. Simple to do ideas to beautify your home and your life are available online, in books, and at stenciling classes across the country.

You can make your own stencils or purchase them. As you begin to work with stencils, hand one to your child and let her or him discover the art of tracing! This may inspire you to create kid projects, or those that you can enjoy together. As you approach your first project, planning is essential. If you plan to stencil a wall, it must be clean. Same with a pail, obviously the surface must be cleaned first. So preparation is half the project. Once that is established the rest is just fun!

The staples of stenciling are a pencil, masking tape, level, ruler, stencil brushes, stencil paint, a saucer or plate, and paper towels. There are 2 basic methods of stenciling to become familiar with. So enjoy the website as you are guided through all you need to know to enjoy the art of stenciling!
